neat story

I'm a regular visitor of

It's just a gaming site that tries not to take things too seriously. They started out the website just so they could get press passes to E3 (big yearly video game expo)

I was bored so I clicked 'about us' on their site and ner the bottom was a funny little story:

It goes back to our roots. How do two nobodys without a booth and an unheard of blog effectively tell an ocean of gamers preoccupied with next-gen consoles about a video game blog called Destructoid? Like they say ... you have to suffer for your art, so we showed up at E3 in a 20 pound metal Destructoid mask made out of air conditioner parts. The response was amazing, and the rest is history. Our logo is based on the classic 50's japanese toy "The smoking robot". We're big in Japan, they just don't know it yet. It is also extremely handy in the clutter of press events, as having a gigantic helmet makes it easy for our fans to find us quickly.

It just goes to show that a little marketing ploy that really connects with your target can go a really long way.
