neat story

I'm a regular visitor of destructoid.com

It's just a gaming site that tries not to take things too seriously. They started out the website just so they could get press passes to E3 (big yearly video game expo)

I was bored so I clicked 'about us' on their site and ner the bottom was a funny little story:

WHAT IS WITH THE HELMET?

It goes back to our roots. How do two nobodys without a booth and an unheard of blog effectively tell an ocean of gamers preoccupied with next-gen consoles about a video game blog called Destructoid? Like they say ... you have to suffer for your art, so we showed up at E3 in a 20 pound metal Destructoid mask made out of air conditioner parts. The response was amazing, and the rest is history. Our logo is based on the classic 50's japanese toy "The smoking robot". We're big in Japan, they just don't know it yet. It is also extremely handy in the clutter of press events, as having a gigantic helmet makes it easy for our fans to find us quickly.

It just goes to show that a little marketing ploy that really connects with your target can go a really long way.

OK Buttons

Ok you've convinced me on the buttons. I'm not very street so I wouldn't know haha

Buttons

The buttons are just a really popular with the street scene... a lot of our target audience (punk/goth/street) will be into the buttons ;)

Ideas

I am loving all of these ideas. The radio show would be wild if we could get something on there. Too bad the audience wouldn't be able to see it haha. But I love the video idea too, I want to make one as well but no video camera maybe I will go rent one for a weekend and just get drunk or something and do it up. Nothing like learning now.

I like the sticker idea more then buttons, not to say I don't like the buttons though

The Edge

Rock Radio station in Toronto. They have a show called the Dean Blundell Show.. they have all sorts of funny shit... and can't even talk about sex without sounding like 12-year-olds. They have shit like "The Blind Movie Reviewer" ... seems like a good match to our target market.

I was thinking of sending them a package. Maybe even go in to the studio in person to drop it off. Maybe include a press release kit, but definitely get them a couple shirts, some buttons and stickers. Would be sweet to get a plug on their show.

Street Team

We could make a couple packages with a few buttons, a few stickers, and 2 or 3 shirts. Send them to friends we know in various cities. Maybe send a package to Sudbury, one to North Bay, Ottawa ... wherever we know people.

They can spread the word for us, hand out stickers and buttons to friends they met at school, or partying.

All our stickers and buttons and FREE tshirts can have our website on them.

(I think we could put our website on promo shirts we give away, but keep it off the paid product) This also leads to getting an order of our logo in a plastisol transfer. Just a note on this, I have a funy shirt that has a logo and website on the back, up by the neck. It's really unobtrusive, and I don't really mind it.

Freebies

We should set aside a budget for marketing. We can get some stickers and 1" buttons made, make some shirts to give away. Nothing too extravagant.

I was thinking we could give a sticker, or a button away with each order (or a couple if they order a bunch of shirts)

This will also lead to the street team....
